ANIMALS WE SAW AT NAGZIRA

I enjoyed this trip a lot. We saw a variety of birds and animals, some rare and some common. But the animal which amazed all of us the most was the tigress. The tigress really made our 4th day precious. Her name is 'Amark' because there is an "A" mark on her left hind leg. The guides were experts in tracking the animals by tracing their paw marks. They also taught us to recognise the alarm calls made by various animals which made it clear that a tiger / tigress was approaching. The sambar would honk, the peocock would start giving frightening calls and monkeys would say chi..chi..chi and quickly climb a tree and look around anxiously. We had to wait for the tigress patiently for a long time. At last she appeared and what a sight it was. We were impressed by her majestic walk. Later we got a chance to see her once again while drinking water at the water hole. Seeing a tigress in the wild is indeed a great sight!

We did not however get to see the male tiger named Dhendu which was in that area at that time.

WAITING FOR THE TIGRESS - AMARK

Some people got to see the Sloth Bear but could not get a photo. But yes, we got a photo of its foot print.

We also saw the Wild Boar and the Indian Gaur, that is, the Bison.

NILGAI

I was the only one to click this picture. I really thought it was a sambar deer as it looked quite similar. But its broad neck and stout body made me suspicious, and then I got to know that it was a nilgai.

Do you know when I think of a deer what it reminds me of? It reminds me of the wild dogs killing a young deer. This is because I actually witnessed the hunting event live in the forests of Nagzira. Here is a picture. It is not clear because it was too far off and I used my Super zoom camera, but I am sure you can notice distinctly how mercilessly the wild dogs eat their kill. They actually finished the whole deer in 5 minutes.

WILD DOGS

Then there were the Grey Langurs - monkeys with black face and ears. They were everywhere - in the forest as well as near the canteen and guest house.

LANGURS

These naughty langurs would come near the canteen and try to snatch our food. One actually took a handful of poha from Anuja Didi's plate while we were having breakfast.
MONITOR LIZARD

This is a monitor lizard. We had been divided into five groups for the safari and one of the groups was named Monitor Lizard group. That group itself saw this monitor lizard (ghorpad).

RUPA THE ELEPHANT

Rupa is a tame female elephant in the forests of Nagzira. She was trying to shoo away the flies which irritated her by collecting sand in her trunk and throwing it on herself.
